Google Unlock CAPTCHA

Have you ever had instances when you try to send/receive your POP mail from Google and you get a pop-up box to enter your username and password? Sometimes, you re-enter your password and then it works. Other times, you go online to Gmail to login to your account and then it works. Once in a blue moon, you try and try, but nothing works.

If this happens to you, you should try the CAPTCHA Unlock form:
https://www.google.com/accounts/DisplayUnlockCaptcha

By the way, CAPTCHA is just the acronym used for Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart -- you know, the security image with distorted letters to prevent automated use of Web sites.

My e-mail message is stuck in the Outbox! Check the file attachment size.

I get this complaint pretty often, and, of course, the sender doesn't provide any error codes to help troubleshoot the issue.

The first thing I look at is whether the sender tried to attach large files. Usually I find out that one problematic (large) message gets stuck and holds up the entire queue. More often than not, the sender attached multiple files that total over 50 MB that cannot possibly be sent (or received) by most mail servers.

Rule of thumb is to limit attachments to 10 MB or less, and this limit pertains to the total size of the message (sum of all attachments, if attaching multiple files). Gmail upgraded their maximum file size limit to 20 MB, but few mail providers will accept such big messages (other exceptions: Yahoo! Mail Plus or other premium paid accounts). Moreover, many corporate e-mail accounts have additional limits on the mailbox size; so, one large message could possibly block a user from sending or receiving e-mail until the message is deleted. Also, keep in mind that 10 MB is slow to download and even slower to upload depending on the speed of your connection to the internet and to the mail server. Out of courtesy to the recipient, try to avoid sending large files.

If you have large files to attach to an e-mail, you can split them into multiple messages to keep them under the size limit. Otherwise, you can use WinZip (or get the free IZArc from Download.com) to compress your files before sending. There are also services that allow you to upload very large files and then send a link to that file to download, such as RapidShare.com, Pando.com or YouSendIt.com.

There may be other reasons why your message gets stuck in your Outbox, such as server connection issues or authentication problems. Identifying the error code helps to pinpoint the root cause.
